HS2 will be much more than a railway. It will be a catalyst for growth, a gateway to the rest of the country and a symbol of our resurgent region.
Over the coming years the project will transform the West Midlands by creating more than 100,000 jobs, adding £14 billion to the local economy, providing thousands of supply chain opportunities to local businesses and connecting over two million people.
It will reduce travel time between the West Midlands and London to under 40 minutes. There will be further benefits through the second phases, which will vastly improve our region’s connectivity to the cities of the north.
This immense project will be delivered nationally by HS2 Ltd.
But the improvements in connectivity in the West Midlands are just as crucial as those to inter-city rail travel. Our long-term transport plan, Movement for Growth, will ensure HS2’s potential is fully realised by putting in place the road, rail and tram links needed to connect and feed into the region's two high speed rail stations.
These stations, Birmingham Curzon Street and Birmingham Interchange at Solihull will become new symbols of the growth and development taking place in the region. They will welcome millions of visitors to the West Midlands. They will also serve as a catalyst for surrounding regeneration projects expected to create at least 50,000 jobs.
To ensure that our region’s rail, road and motorway networks continue to perform while these improvements are being made a dedicated programme of Network Resilience is being created to keep the West Midlands moving.
HS2 will establish the region as a leading centre of rail technology. To meet the demand for skilled people and to add another strand to the West Midlands economy Birmingham is home to one of two campuses of the National College for High Speed Rail.
Our vision is to harness the unrivalled connectivity and investment of HS2 to create a step change in the West Midlands’ economic performance, driving growth and significantly improving outcomes for its people, businesses and places.
We will achieve this through our Growth Strategy, which outlines the delivery methods, local and national partnerships, and funding structures that will turn these ambitions into reality. Together we will ensure that through HS2 this region is at the heart of the UK’s economic future.
