Careers Hub Calendar 2023-24

Foreword

Introduction

Here in the West Midlands Combined Authority, we are gearing up for a packed year of events and activities to support you to plan and deliver your careers programme in 2023-24.

In addition to events/resources for students & parents you will find that your local Careers Hub will provide CPD opportunities for Careers Professionals and Teaching Staff – whether you need to update your knowledge of the local labour market,

Apprenticeships and Technical Pathways or get some individual support with examples of how to provide meaningful encounters and experiences. Last year saw the introduction of new Provider Access Legislation and again this year our local Careers Hub teams will be here to support you through that.

Any day is a good day to hold a career event, but busy educators can make use of our calendar to frame the opportunities for careers activities and inspire young people as they transition into the next phase of their education or career.

Whilst you are planning for the next academic year you can use our calendar to plot out key dates to harness young people’s excitement for real world events. With several key dates such as National Apprenticeship Week and lesser-known key dates such as World Space Week, use our calendar to plan your programme making the most of the opportunities universally on offer. Use the calendar to plan your careers year and your local team will support you to find resources to help you plan your delivery.

The local teams look forward to seeing you all at the Careers Hub Meetings where you can meet likeminded colleagues and share good practise examples and resources. Your Coordinator will be on hand to work with you and your Enterprise Adviser to navigate through the Compass Audit toolkit and identify where you would like to do more. Compass+ continues to be developed and there will be some great additions and changes coming your way, we are hoping that every school will start to make use of the Future Skills Questionnaire, create targeted groups who need additional or different interventions and use Compass+ to track each to ensure each and every young person receives the encounters and experiences that will help shape their development.

Have a great year from all of us here at the West Midlands Combined Authority and your local Careers hub – Birmingham - Black Country – Coventry – Solihull

The Ask Programme

The Apprenticeship Support and Knowledge for schools and colleges programme (ASK) will be back for the new academic year to support schools, students and their families to find out

about Apprenticeships, Traineeships and T Levels.

Swap Don’t Drop

The WMCA’s ‘Swap Don’t Drop’ campaign will be aimed at targeting young people who may be confused, uncertain and at risk of dropping out of education.

However, some of the issues around students dropping out, may be related to the institution being the wrong choice and would be a deal breaker in the student staying where they are (i.e., didn’t like teaching staff, too far to travel, didn’t form friendship groups).

We will focus on delivering a content-led, advice campaign, where we will encourage students to consider all alternative options rather than dropping out, including switching institution and type of study.

On advice from Colleges West Midlands we will be running the campaign in two 3 week periods this year:

  • November 6th for 3 weeks

  • January 8th for 3 weeks

Watch out for our campaign details coming soon on our website: West Midlands Careers Hub

RSPB Feed the birds day

Wild birds are important to many people in society and have an impact on our ecosystem. During this weekend The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (R.S.P.B.) advises people to put out food and water for birds regularly. These can be kept in safe environments where the birds can land, rest and replenish themselves. Birds can be in danger of malnutrition during colder months. The weather naturally limits the amount of food the birds get access to in the wild.
