The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) has confirmed Claire Nye as its Chief Finance Officer.

Claire has been acting in the role of Interim Chief Finance Officer and Section 73 Officer since July 2025.

Her appointment was confirmed today (Friday 12 June) by the Mayor and the leaders of the region’s seven metropolitan councils at a meeting of the WMCA Board.

As Chief Finance Officer, Claire will be responsible for overseeing the proper administration of all financial affairs, including the safeguarding of public funds and overall value for money.

Ed Cox, Chief Executive of WMCA welcomed the Board’s decision: “Claire has provided strong financial leadership for our region at a time when devolution has seen a significant increase in the size of the WMCA’s budget and more control over how to use that money for the benefit of local people and businesses.

“But that has also brought greater responsibility and I have always been clear that we manage the WMCA’s finances sensibly and transparently. Claire’s role as Chief Finance Officer will be fundamental to that.

“Her appointment gives us consistency and stability as we continue to drive economic growth across the West Midlands, and work to make this region the best place to live, work and visit.”

Since stepping into the role, Claire has helped plug a near £120m budget deficit for the coming year without the need to introduce a Mayoral precept or cuts to transport budgets.

Claire is a CIPFA-qualified local government finance professional who built her career largely within City of Wolverhampton Council, progressing from technical accounting roles to Chief Accountant and ultimately Director of Finance (Section 151 Officer) joining the WMCA in 2024.

Speaking after her appointment, Claire said: “It’s been a privilege to serve as interim Chief Finance Officer over the last year and I look forward to continuing on a permanent basis, working with Ed, the Mayor, our councils and partners.

“These are exciting times for our region with growing devolved budget responsibilities that will require sound financial decisions to help build a stronger regional economy that drives jobs and higher living standards for local people.”
