Consultation on Key Route Network legislation
About the consultation
The West Midlands Key Route Network (KRN) comprises the most crucial roads for moving people and goods around the region. It enables a strategic, regional approach to transport planning, investment, and management.
In the West Midlands we have a unique challenge. We are the only combined authority with a designated KRN in government legislation. This unique setup prevents us from changing our KRN to reflect changes in travel patterns and the road network.
We are seeking permission from the Department for Transport to change the legislation so we are able to use our devolved powers to change the Key Route Network. We would continue to collaborate closely with the seven metropolitan authorities, to make strategic decisions about the network. The Local Authorities will retain responsibility for managing and maintaining the road network in their respective areas.
To obtain permission we’re required to consult with our Local Authority Partners, stakeholders, and residents. That's why we're asking for your input. This consultation is not about the key routes themselves, but about the West Midlands Combined Authority being able to adapt the network to changing need.
