BBC Studios Drama Productions
Workplace Learning Champion
BBC Studios Drama Productions has been recognised as the Workplace Learning Champion for its bold, inclusive, and future-focused approach to workforce development in the West Midlands’ creative sector. Through its innovative “West Midlands Juniors” programme, the studio has created real, paid opportunities for local talent to gain hands-on experience on major productions such as Father Brown, Sister Boniface, and Silent Witness.
In 2024, 17 junior roles were created, with 82% of participants progressing into new roles—71% of whom remained within the BBC. This success is set to grow in 2025, with 53 additional training and upskilling opportunities planned, including roles from Art Trainee to Junior Production Manager and 10 bespoke CPD pathways. The programme also offers holistic support, including pastoral care, mental health workshops, and industry mentoring.
This model doesn’t just train—it transforms. BBC Studios has reversed the traditional bootcamp model by embedding learning directly into live productions, allowing trainees to earn credits and gain real-world experience that boosts employability and confidence.
Aligned with WMCA Priorities
This approach directly supports the West Midlands Combined Authority’s (WMCA) mayoral priorities around:
- Skills development – equipping residents with the tools to thrive in high-growth sectors.
- Social mobility – creating accessible pathways into competitive industries.
- Community enhancement – investing in local talent and institutions to build a stronger regional economy.
Working with the WMCA Careers Hub
BBC Studios Drama Productions has also worked closely with the WMCA Careers Hub, which connects employers with schools and colleges across the region. This partnership has enabled:
- Outreach to over 20 schools, reaching more than 600 students.
- A short films project with Walsall Studio School, Wolverhampton College, and Solihull College (Stratford-upon-Avon), giving students practical experience in script writing and production.
These efforts ensure that young people across the West Midlands are inspired, informed, and equipped to pursue careers in the creative industries—helping to secure a sustainable talent pipeline for years to come.
A Model for Other Employers
BBC Studios Drama Productions exemplifies what it means to be a standout employer. By embedding training into real work, offering wraparound support, and investing in local partnerships, they are not only meeting their business needs—they are reshaping the regional creative landscape.
Their success shows what’s possible when employers, educators, and regional authorities work together to unlock talent, close skills gaps, and build a more inclusive economy.
