Karl Wilson

Learning for Work

Karl’s story is one of extraordinary resilience and transformation. After giving up his business and home to care for his mother, Karl faced homelessness, unemployment, and depression. But through a WMCA-funded training programme with Release Potential, Karl found the support, skills, and confidence to rebuild his life.

Initially reserved and unsure of his future, Karl flourished during the course—mentoring peers, achieving all learning outcomes, and regaining his self-belief. His dedication led to a work placement and ultimately a paid role as a Learner Recruitment Officer, where he now helps others overcome similar barriers.

“Before the course, I felt like I had no future. But the training helped me rediscover my value and purpose. I now have a job I love, and I’m helping others find their path too. It’s never too late to start again,” said Karl.

Karl now plays a vital role in engaging underrepresented groups across the West Midlands, including older adults and young people, proving that learning can be a powerful force for change at any stage of life.

Helene Dearn, Interim Executive Director of Employment, Skills, Health and Communities at WMCA, said: “Karl’s journey is a shining example of how adult learning can transform lives. His story will inspire many others to take that first step.”
