How a family tragedy didn’t stop Keegan building a better future
After losing his mum in the spring of 2025, Keegan was suddenly faced with unimaginable responsibility. Not only coping with his own grief but then stepping up to care for his younger siblings and keep his family together.
Despite these challenges, Keegan was determined to move forward.
Stepping up when it matters most
As the eldest, Keegan took on the role of provider, protector and role model. While navigating the legal process to become his siblings’ guardian, he also managed the day-to-day realities of running a home, all while working a zero-hours job to make ends meet.
At the same time, he made a decision that would shape his future: to invest in himself.
He enrolled on a Path 2 Apprenticeship course in Teaching Assistant skills, determined to build a better life - not just for himself, but for his family.
Learning through challenge
The eight-week course was intensive, covering everything from safeguarding and behaviour management to child development and first aid. But even with everything happening in his personal life, Keegan showed unwavering commitment, passing every module and giving his full effort throughout.
He continued attending counselling, supported his siblings through their own grief, and kept pushing forward with his studies.
His determination never wavered.
Turning passion into purpose
Keegan had always been passionate about supporting young people, with hands-on experience volunteering with children, including those with additional needs. The course gave him the skills, confidence and qualifications to transform that passion into a rewarding career.
Today, he works full-time as a Learning Support Assistant, helping young people overcome challenges, build confidence and achieve their potential every day.
It's a career that reflects not only the skills he has developed, but the compassion, commitment and determination that define who he is.
An inspiration to others
What makes Keegan’s story so powerful is not just what he has achieved, but how he has done it.
Through grief, responsibility and uncertainty, he stayed focused on building a better future. He refused to let his circumstances define him-and instead used them as motivation to succeed.
He is now the role model he set out to be: for his siblings, for the young people he supports, and for anyone facing difficult times.
A story of resilience and hope
Keegan’s journey is a reminder of the strength people can show in the face of adversity-and the life-changing impact of opportunity, support and determination.
He hasn’t just overcome challenges. He’s used them to build a future where he can make a difference to others every single day.
And that’s what makes his story so inspiring.
Ruth Brown, tutor at Performance Through People said: “Keegan is an inspiration to all young adults who despite facing difficult times and hurdles kept going and now has a professional career helping young people achieve their goals no matter how big or small.”
