Opening the door to opportunity: helping people take their first step into work in Wolverhampton

For many people, getting a job isn’t just about skills - it’s about opportunity. Without experience, it can be hard to get started. That’s where Open Door is making a real difference by bringing together employers, partners and local communities.

Run by Wolverhampton City Council in collaboration with local partners, Open Door is helping adults of all ages take that crucial first step into the workplace, offering hands-on experience, building confidence, and opening up new possibilities for the future.

A first step that changes everything

Open Door provides work placements for people aged 18 and over, many who have little or no previous experience.

From roles within the Civic Centre to placements with local businesses, including cafés and IT companies, participants get a real insight into working life.

For many, it’s their first taste of a structured working environment - learning how to build routines, work as part of a team, and develop the skills employers are looking for.

And it works. Many participants go on to secure jobs or apprenticeships as a direct result of their placement, turning that first opportunity into long-term employment.

Building confidence, not just CVs

What makes Open Door so powerful is its focus on the whole person. Alongside workplace skills, participants build confidence, independence and a sense of purpose.

They learn how to manage their time, improve their communication, and even travel independently - small steps that make a big difference. For some, it’s the first time they’ve felt truly ready for work.

The programme also removes practical barriers by covering travel costs and providing lunch vouchers, ensuring that everyone has the chance to take part.

A pathway to a brighter future

Open Door isn’t just about work experience. It’s about opening up a future. Whether someone is starting from scratch, changing direction, or simply looking for a chance to prove themselves, the programme provides the support and opportunity to move forward.

By helping people gain skills, confidence and real-world experience, Open Door is doing exactly what its name promises - opening the door to new beginnings, brighter futures, and lasting change.

Parveen Sidhu, Youth Transitions Coach at Wolverhampton City Council, said: “Open Door is a highly impactful programme that positively transforms the lives of young people across Wolverhampton.

“Through meaningful work experience opportunities, participants gain valuable insight into the world of work, develop essential employability skills, and build the confidence needed to pursue their future ambitions.

“Many participants progress into full-time employment, while others secure apprenticeships as a direct result of their placements. This clearly demonstrates the effectiveness of the programme in supporting young people to move closer to, and successfully enter, the labour market.

“The programme makes a significant difference to our participants’ personal and professional development. Young people report increased confidence, improved motivation, and a greater understanding of workplace expectations and professional behaviour. The placements provide structure, purpose, self value and a realistic experience of working life, helping participants to develop the resilience and skills needed to succeed.”
