Ricky Finlan
Adult Learner of the Year – Skills for Work
Overcoming addiction to achieve academic excellence and challenge stereotypes
Eight years ago, Ricky made a life-changing decision - to turn his life around and build a better future.
Today, he’s not only thriving in education, but inspiring those around him to do the same.
A fresh start with a clear purpose
After struggling with alcohol and drug addiction in the past, Ricky has now been in recovery for eight years.
He joined a Diploma in Midwifery with a strong ambition: to build a career supporting women, babies and families at some of the most important moments in their lives.
From the very beginning, he stood out.
A mature learner with determination and focus, Ricky has consistently achieved top grades, earning distinctions across his course. His dedication to learning-and to his future career-has never wavered.
Leading by example
But Ricky’s impact goes far beyond his own success.
As a student representative, he has become a trusted voice for his peers-listening, supporting and working closely with tutors to improve the student experience. His efforts have helped create a more open, supportive and inclusive learning environment for everyone on the course.
Balancing these responsibilities alongside a demanding programme is no small feat, but Ricky has handled it with professionalism, commitment and care.
Breaking down barriers
Ricky is helping to challenge perceptions in a profession where men are underrepresented.
Hilary Gardner, Head of Division at Halesowen College, said: “Ricky has shown determination as a male student in a profession where men remain underrepresented, helping to promote inclusivity and challenge outdated perceptions about gender roles in healthcare.”
Through his attitude, compassion and commitment, he is demonstrating that midwifery is a career for anyone with the passion to care and make a difference.
A story of resilience
Hilary adds: “Ricky’s story represents the values of dedication, inclusion, leadership, and community impact.
“By combining academic excellence with meaningful contributions to his learning community, he has gone above and beyond expectations and is an inspiring example of what adult learners in the West Midlands can achieve.”
