Telford College

Engaging Adults in Learning

At the heart of Telford College’s success is its innovative HGV training provision, funded by WMCA and delivered in partnership with PR Training, GTG Training, and A1 Training. This programme is designed to tackle the national shortage of HGV drivers — projected to be substantial over the coming years — while opening doors for unemployed and low-income adults, including those experiencing homelessness or long-term unemployment, especially in high-need areas like Birmingham.

Real Skills, Real Jobs

  • Hundreds of learners have completed the “Into Employment” programme since August 2024
  • High qualification rates and job outcomes that exceed regional expectations
  • A blended learning model combining classroom sessions, practical driver training, and employability workshops
  • Laptops provided to enhance digital literacy and support flexible learning

Inclusive and Life-Changing

Telford College’s approach is inclusive and transformative:

  • A significant proportion of learners come from diverse cultural backgrounds
  • Women are actively participating, challenging gender stereotypes in logistics
  • Wrap-around support includes financial literacy workshops, hardship funds, mental health guidance, and career coaching

Strong Employer Partnerships

Collaboration with employers like Currys Birmingham Depot has been vital. These partnerships provide:

  • Industry insights
  • Mock interviews
  • Job fairs and direct recruitment

Currys alone has hired 33 learners, with 28 more in the recruitment pipeline.

Stories of Transformation

Behind the statistics are powerful personal journeys:

  • Mark Jones, a former plasterer, rebuilt his life after personal tragedy and is now employed in construction.
  • Peter Wheeler, once homeless, found hope and employment through the programme.
  • Lauren Gough, a single mother of four, achieved her dream of becoming an HGV driver, securing a better future for her family.

Telford College’s HGV programme exemplifies WMCA’s mission to align skills with employer needs, break down barriers to employment, and create inclusive opportunities for all. Their work is not just about training—it’s about transforming lives and strengthening communities across the West Midlands.
