Timothy Jackson
Skills for Life Achievement
At 72, Timothy Jackson is living proof that it’s never too late to learn, grow, and thrive. A former Senior Operational Finance professional, Tim’s life took an unexpected turn when he experienced two episodes of sudden sensory neural hearing loss—one following a flu vaccination, and the second due to Covid. The result was profound hearing loss in both ears, forcing him into early retirement and a complete reassessment of how he communicates with the world.
Rather than retreat, Tim chose to adapt. He enrolled in British Sign Language (BSL) classes at Adult Education Wolverhampton, determined to stay connected and independent. What began as a practical step soon became a transformative journey. Tim not only completed his Level 1 course but is now studying at an advanced level, fully immersing himself in the Deaf community by attending BSL cafés and Deaf pubs, where he’s built new friendships and found a renewed sense of belonging.
Tim’s story is one of resilience, reinvention, and remarkable courage. He describes BSL as his “insurance option” for the future—but it’s already enriched his present. With the support of dedicated tutors, he’s learned not just a language, but how to be “streetwise deaf,” gaining real-world skills that empower him to navigate life with confidence.
WMCA funds inclusive learning opportunities like BSL and is committed to making the West Midlands a national exemplar for engaging disabled people in learning, work, and community life.
His journey embodies the spirit of the Skills for Life Award—showing how adult learning can rebuild confidence, open doors, and create community. Tim is not just a learner; he’s an inspiration.
