Thanks to the legacy fund around £39m in total was invested in supporting the West Midlands economy to thrive through business support, skills development and a focus on attracting major events and inward investment to the region.
Mobilising Plan for Growth – a key delivery programme of the wider West Midlands Plan For Growth, encouraged high-growth sectors and supported supply chain transition, helping the region plan for our future.
- The high-growth funding stream worked alongside 50 existing businesses in high-growth sectors across the West Midlands to support businesses in these areas to develop and grow sustainably. 71 new jobs were created, over £5m of new public and private investment was secured and over £11m of new sales value was generated
- The Supply Chain Transition programme supported over 120 automotive and manufacturing businesses looking to accelerate their move towards alignment with these high-growth sectors, and diversify their customer base

The legacy funding was also used to support wider investment into skills development and employment support for the region through the Jobs, Skills and Wellbeing programme. Local authorities received around £800,000 to deliver projects in areas they identified. Thousands of west midlands residents received job support and careers advice to help them plan for their futures. Targeted mentoring and paid work placements helped some of our more vulnerable residents to gain valuable skills and access paid employment.
Aligning the legacy fund with other skills-based funding opportunities and working alongside local authority partners meant we created a more holistic approach to employment support that responded to what’s needed on the ground.
Based on the success of the Commonwealth Games, we continue to promote the West Midlands as a vibrant business and leisure destination through the Global West Midlands programme.
