Birmingham Knowledge Quarter (BKQ)

The Birmingham Knowledge Quarter (B-KQ) is a world-leading city-centre innovation ecosystem designated as a state-of-the-art, research and development cluster for cutting-edge companies specialising in advanced digital technologies, engineering and HealthTech research.

Overview of BK-Q:

  • Located within Birmingham City Centre and spanning east towards Aston.
  • Aimed at supporting R&D in digital-tech and health-tech-centred enterprises.
  • Created as part of a new Global Innovation District.
  • Developing 131ha as part of a wider strategic plan area of 210ha.
  • Offers 580,00sqm of development floorspace and benefits from tax incentives.
  • Benefits from business retention rates and tax incentives.
  • Triple helix partnership: Aston University, Birmingham City University, Birmingham City Council, Bruntwood SciTech and Woodbourne Group.

In the first five years of the West Midlands Investment Zones, the capital funding of £9m for BK-Q, funded by WMCA will develop the site in the following way:

  • Construction of Area Wide Active Travel, which will improve travel schemes within BK-Q, including cycling, walking and wheeling – facilitating better, low-cost travel for work, education and leisure.
  • Construction of James Watt Queensway Super Crossing, which will improve the suitability and safety of the current pedestrian crossing, unlocking connectivity between the Aston University campus and the city centre via Corporation Street.
