Evidence underpinning the Spatial Development Strategy

The Spatial Development Strategy is informed by a wide range of research, technical studies and existing regional strategies.

This evidence helps us understand the West Midlands today, identify future opportunities and challenges, and ensure decisions are based on robust, up-to-date information.

As the strategy develops, new evidence will continue to be commissioned and published to support its preparation and independent examination.

Our interactive mapping tool allows you to explore important data that will be used to inform the Spatial Development Strategy, all in one place. You can use it to see transport networks, environmental data, housing and employment allocations, social infrastructure and other relevant spatial information.

As work progresses, the map will also be updated to show emerging evidence and future policy proposals.

The evidence base

The evidence base brings together existing research, technical studies and newly commissioned work.

It helps us understand the region's housing needs, economy, transport network, environment, infrastructure and communities, ensuring the Spatial Development Strategy is informed by robust evidence.

The evidence is organised around the seven themes of the SDS and will continue to evolve as further work is completed.
